John Joseph Lydon (; born 31 January 1956), also known past his stage name Johnny Rotten, is an English language singer and songwriter. 1993–2006: Solo album, autobiography and celebrity status [edit]

In 2000, Lydon and Nora became legal guardians of Ari's twin teenaged boys; as Lydon explained "[Ari] allow them run costless. They couldn't read, write or form proper sentences. He comes from an emigrant working class groundwork and is opposed to the grade system, describing how individual schools "tend to plough out little snobs. They're taught a sense of superiority, which is the buss of death ... They're absolutely screwed up for life."[77] He is critical of the upper class, stating that they "parasite off the population every bit their friends aid them forth" but he equally criticises the working class, claiming that "We're lazy, skilful-for-nothing bastards, accented cop-outs [who] never accept responsibility for our own lives and that'southward why we'll always exist downtrodden."[78] He opposes all forms of segregation in schools, not simply through the private and state schoolhouse division but also with single-sexual activity schools: "Information technology doesn't brand sense. The Troubles, 1969–1994 [edit]

Lydon criticised the paramilitary organisations involved in The Troubles in Northern Ireland, remarking that the Provisional Irish gaelic Republican Army and the Ulster Defence Association were "like two mafia gangs punching each other out ... He remarked that "The Northern Ireland problem is a terrible matter, and it'due south only the ignorance of the people living outside of it that keeps information technology going" but that ultimately the British government's exploitative attitude to the problem was in his opinion the chief cause.[lxxx]

Despite the fact that he wrote and sang "Chaos in the U.K." with the Sex Pistols, Lydon said that he was not an anarchist, calling it "heed games for the centre-class".[81]

Banking and the 2008 global financial crisis [edit]

Appearing on the BBC'southward Question Time on 5 July 2012, Lydon questioned the notion of a parliamentary inquiry into the cyberbanking industry, saying "How on earth is Parliament going to hash out this really when both sides, left and right, are connected to this? This doesn't but go back to Brown, this is office of the ongoing problem. Mr Diamond comes from Wall Street ... hello. Both parties honey this thought. They are fiddling with rates. They are affecting the world and everything we used to count on as being dependable and accurate is being discussed by these belligerent chaps. If I nick a motor I'm going to be up before the approximate, the rozzers. Hullo, aforementioned affair."[82]

Institutions of the Britain [edit]

On the same episode of Question Time, Lydon was disquisitional of the announcement that the British Army was to exist reduced in size, saying: "I of the most beautiful things about Britain, apart from the [National Health Service] and the free educational activity, is the British Army."[83] He has been a supporter of the NHS since receiving treatment for meningitis aged 7, stating in 2014: "I want national health and didactics to always exist of the highest agenda and I practise non mind paying tax for that."[84]

He added: "I bet none of this will exist allowed out."[87] Later on the interviewer suggested libel might be an upshot, Lydon replied, "Nothing I've said is libel."[88]

As Lydon predicted, the comment was edited out by the BBC before circulate. Earlier Donald Trump was elected President of the United States, Lydon said, in response to questions about his prospects: "No, I can't see it happening, it's a minority that back up him at best, and information technology's then hateful and ignorant."[92] In 2017, though, he said "I'one thousand upwardly for anyone shaking upward the jaded world of politicians".[98] During a Good Morning Britain interview in March 2017, Lydon described Trump as a "complicated young man" who "terrifies politicians". Lydon said that there were "many, many problems with (Trump) every bit a human being" only dedicated him against accusations of racism: "What I dislike is the left-wing media in America are trying to smear the gars as a racist and that's completely not true."[93] He elaborated to NPR: "He'due south a total cat amongst the pigeons ... In 2018, Lydon was photographed wearing a shirt that read Make America Great Again.[99] In Oct 2020, Lydon told the BBC's Newsday programme, "Yes, of course, I'm voting for Trump ... He also described his support for Trump as stemming from his background as a working class Englishman and defendant the US media of being dominated past liberal ideology, but "liberal with the truth" and claimed "they toe the line of the Democrat party by assumption that they know what'south best, even so they don't know nil well-nigh bluish collar workers, Latinos, African-Americans in or outside of large cities."[94]

Lydon has expressed opposition to the Cold-shoulder, Divestment and Sanctions movement.[96] In 2010, when Elvis Costello and Roger Waters announced their intention to cancel performances in State of israel and boycott the country, Lydon elected to go along with a Public Image Ltd concert in Tel Aviv. When asked about his decision in an interview with The Independent Lydon remarked "if Elvis-fucking-Costello wants to pull out of a gig in Israel because he's suddenly got this compassion for Palestinians, then good on him. Just I have absolutely one dominion, correct? Until I run across an Arab state, a Muslim state, with a democracy, I won't empathise how anyone can take a problem with how they're treated."[101]
